Review:
Lucky parents and lucky kids: Former Del Fuegos lead singer Dan Zanes has made family music his heartfelt calling. Since his first release, "Rocket Beach," in 2000, the raspy-voiced ex-rocker has gotten better and better, and this playful yet bedtime cozy third release puts him among the top in the field. Zanes' folk inspirations-Woody Guthrie, Leadbelly, Ella Jenkins and others-are very much alive here, and so is his unpretentious, unsynthesized, jammin'-in-the-kitchen acoustic sound, a deliberately crafted sound that he labels "handmade." Along with singers Aimee Mann, Lou Reed, Barbara Brousal, Father Goose (Rankin' Dan), the West Indian "Sandy Girls" and others, Zanes infuses each well-chosen track on this eclectic mix with passion and sincerity, from the standard "Side By Side" and such folk classics as Woody Guthrie's "So Long, It's Been to Know Yuh" to memorable original songs that evoke wistful nostalgia and childhood magic. These include "Night Owl," "Smile, Smile, Smile," "Firefly" and the breathtakingly beautiful "Linger for Awhile," a tender portrait of families sharing a balmy night out on the front steps: "There's a moon over my street, tipped back like a silver chair, and the sweet smell of dogwoods bringing summer to the springtime air..."
